Millfields Gates | Plymouth
The Brief
Repair of Grade II listed gates (both piers and railings) to Millfields development of the historic former Royal Naval Hospital in Plymouth.
The Solution
Dismantle pier stones down to the gate hinge point. Remove remaining ironwork to avoid further damage in the future / replace where necessary with stainless steel, avoiding corrosion. Cut out and work 2No new sections of Portland stone to replace damaged areas, all worked to match original lines and detail.
Refix the pier including all necessary stainless-steel cramps and dowels. All stones to be bedded and pointed using a suitable matching lime mortar mix.
Inspect and assess the condition of the railings and the gate, strip the railings of paint back to metal, treat any rust spots after stripping, prime, undercoat and topcoat the railings matching the required colours.
Gild the specific details on the railings, key back the wooden gates and repair any areas that have blistered or show signs of weathering, then paint two topcoats on the gates matching the required green and reinstall the railings into the gates.
